Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the thyroid

Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) of the Thyroid

FNAB is the primary diagnostic tool used for evaluating thyroid nodules. It involves collecting a small sample of cells from a lesion using a very thin needle. The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance, which ensures precise targeting of the nodule being assessed.

The collected material is then examined by a pathologist. This examination allows for the differentiation between benign lesions and suspicious or malignant ones, helping to determine the best course of further treatment.

The biopsy is a brief, safe outpatient procedure that typically requires no special preparation. Most patients can return to their daily activities immediately after the exam.

Preparation for the Procedure

If you are taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet drugs (e.g., acenocoumarol, warfarin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban, clopidogrel), please inform your doctor before the procedure. In some cases, a temporary adjustment to your medication may be necessary.
